When customers embark on their evolutionary mission, they will find they must overcome significant cultural inertia within IT. At a minimum, customers must change the following beliefs to ensure the IT development process becomes architecture-centric.

Overcoming Cultural Inertia

+ Computing systems are abstract and do not benefit from the same rigorous architecture as traditional construction.

"Problems cannot be resolved by the same consciousness that created them".

KT1 Design has the appropriate consciousness to help customers resolve IT architecture problems.

+ Rigorous architecture compromises IT flexibility.

+ Flexibility is a desirable aspect of an IT project. In reality, greater expense is directly proportional to greater flexibility.

+ IT has the appropriate architecture resources and processes.

+ Empirical processes not intellectual processes are the most efficient method of acquiring knowledge of the architecture.

+ Customers must relinquish architecture responsibilities to IT because customers lack architecture expertise.

The difficulty of overcoming cultural inertia cannot be underestimated. Some companies will experience several asteroid projects before they finally find the strength and direction necessary to overcome the cultural inertia. Albert Einstein described a critical success factor in the ability to overcome cultural inertia:
